Formalin (Formaldehyde) – Powerful Antimicrobial Preservative for Industrial & Cosmetic Use
Formaldehyde, with INCI name Formaldehyde and CAS number 50-00-0, is one of the oldest and most potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservatives used in cosmetic formulation. In cosmetics it is typically supplied as Formalin, an aqueous solution containing 37 to 40 percent formaldehyde by weight. As a preservative, formaldehyde is active against bacteria, fungi, and yeast at very low use concentrations, making it effective in highly water-active systems. It is most commonly applied in rinse-off products such as shampoos, liquid soaps, and body washes, and in nail hardener treatments where it serves a dual structural and preservative function. Under the EU Cosmetics Regulation, formaldehyde is classified as a restricted ingredient under Annex V, Entry 5, with a maximum permitted concentration of 0.2 percent as free formaldehyde in non-oral cosmetic products. Products must carry the declaration "contains formaldehyde" when concentration in the finished product exceeds 0.05 percent. Rabibazaar supplies cosmetic-grade Formalin to professional cosmetic chemists, regulated manufacturers, and advanced formulators who require precisely verified raw materials.
